The rankings were compiled using criteria like atmosphere, size, and of course, the quality of the pizza. A classic “old-school” pizzeria has a lived-in feel and serves up the best slices around.

So, which Fairfield County locale made the cut — or rather, the slice? Colony Grill, located at 172 Myrtle Avenue in Stamford, ranked as one of the 56 best old-school pizza shops in the nation.

Colony Grill has a total of five locations, but the original Stamford locale has become an institution, opening in 1935.

Colony Grill offers a unique twist on their thin crust pies by drizzling them with their signature “hot oil,” a spicy and flavorful pepper-infused oil infused that brings each and every slice to life. Coupled with the eatery’s long, narrow barroom and comfortable, old-fashioned booth seating, it’s easy to see why the place has reached near legendary status.

Don’t forget to check out Colony Grill’s expansive beer menu so you can enjoy the perfect brew alongside your piping hot slice.

Other old-fashioned Connecticut pizzerias that made the list of the nation’s best include Roseland Apizza in Derby and Zuppardi's in West Haven.

In New Haven, Ernie's Pizzeria, Sally's Apizza and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana also made the list.
